Is there anyway to build horizontal navigation into the templates rather than vertical navigation?

Yes. Not only can you use horizontal navigation, but you can pick from 2 different kinds of horizontal navigation: horizontal main-page links (#hmains) and/or horizontal sub-page links (#hsubs). Or as a third option you can just hard-code your links via the index.php?pr=Page_Name method. Note that you don't want to hard-code menu links if you're planning to sell on the Addons site...but if you're building a template for specific site only and you know exactly what links will be on the menu and that they're not going to change much, then it may be the way to go for you.
